Packing for College - The 4-Box Challenge

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Tracey Drake The time has finally arrived for you to leave home and go away to college. What an exciting time! If you are like most, your bedroom is currently a disaster area with clothes, books, compact disks and miscellaneous items strewn everywhere. You want to take it all and you cannot decide what to take and what to leave behind, and at the moment, this seems like a bigger decision that deciding which college to attend. How many times have you packed, unpacked and then repacked that favorite sweatshirt? Take a break, relax and let me share with you some insights into how to pack for college. 1) Your dorm room is small if you overstuff it with clothing and personal items, there will be nowhere to sleep or study (which is the reason you are going to college, after all!). Additionally, you might not make the best roommate if you are hogging all the square footage in your shared room. 2) You are not leaving forever> your parents are not going to rent out your bedroom at home as soon as you leave for college and you are coming back. Think short-term what do you need for the first few months of college? What is the weather like in your college town in the fall? Pack accordingly and dont take everything you own. 3) Things are going to change, and fast Once you get to school, especially if you are going across country or perhaps to another country; you will find that college life is more or less casual than you anticipated. It is a good idea to pack the staples; jeans, sweatshirts, a few clubbing outfits, pajamas and comfy study sweats and leave the rest at home. Once you have been at school a few weeks, if you find you are missing essentials from home, you can have mom or dad ship them to you or pick them up on your next visit back home. If you want to succeed in taking what you need and leave the rest behind, try the 4-box challenge. Get four good sized packing boxes (but not appliance size) and line them up along one side of your bed, leaving plenty of free space in front of them. Get a marker and label them clothing 1, clothing 2, school stuff, and personal. Now look around your room. One item at a time, place them in front of the box; sweaters and jeans in the clothing boxes, CDs, toiletries and picture frames in the personal box, textbooks, duo tangs and writing supplies in school stuff. In this challenge, 2 boxes are allotted for clothing. One box should be essentials including your day-to-day clothing and the second box should be for special occasion outfits, your big fluffy bathrobe, shoes and a few purses. If everything will not fit into the boxes, you must edit what you have selected. This is the toughest part of the challenge but with a little perseverance, you can do it. If you are having a tough time, ask yourself the following questions: 1) How many times have I worn this in the past month? 2) Will I use this item at least once a week for the next few months? 3) Can I live without it? Keep plugging away until the boxes are full but not overflowing. Once you are done, close the boxes and tape them shut. You are ready to leave for college with your most favorite possessions. Now its probably time to clean up the aftermath! GradResumes.com specializes in writing graduate resumes and college admission documents. Attracting Women - 6 Personality Types That Naturally Attract Women

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Sonia Kalra There are two mental roads - Lover (short term) or Provider (long term). If you get on one road, it’s hard to get off. So choose wisely. Women respond to Lover personalities by having sex with them immediately.Women respond to Provider personalities by withholding sex in order to make the man prove that he will stay loyal for the long run. Lover Personalities (Self Oriented,Seduces Women): Adventurer Bad Boy (fun and danger) Someone who is fun and thrilling to be around. Seducer (sex) Someone who is sensual and sexy and makes her feel sexy. Artist (Musician, Poet) (emotion) Someone who moves her emotions and is enigmatic and complex. Provider Personalities (Her Oriented,Courts A Woman): Successful Guy (means) Someone who provides a great lifestyle and stability. Regular Guy (loyalty) Someone who is down to earth, loyal and stable. Ass Kissing Guy (her boy) Someone who gives her whatever she wants. Most of the women in this world will respond to ALL of these personalities to one extent or another. There are also several ‘unsuccessful’ personality types but those types are not attractive to mostwomen. (If you are one of these, dont take it personally. Try something different.) So take some time and think about who you have been up until now, the new perspective that you have, and how you are going to be different in the future. Write down three things you can start doing RIGHT NOW to become more like the Personality type that you would like to be come. Then get to work and stick with it! The Healing Touch

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Ann Stewart Touch is of utmost importance in the healing process. Whether youre down with the flu or lying sick in a hospital bed, the one thing you crave most is a gentle touch, a warm hug, a mothers kiss on the sore spot with the assurance that it is all better. Yet, you are so often caught up with mixed emotions, like I have the flu; I better not hug anyone. Let me share a story of a woman who was actually banned from society and was considered unclean according to the health law and custom of her day. This lady had a bleeding condition for years and, after spending all her money on doctors, there was no hope left. But… she had heard of Jesus and how he healed all that were sick. (mat. 8:16; luke 8: 45- 49) She had only one thing on her mind. She knew that she knew that she knew she would get healed. If only she could somehow break through the throngs of people following Him and get close to Him, she was convinced that she would receive her healing. She knew that she could be stoned to death for approaching anyone in her present condition. In fact, she was required to wear special clothing that set her apart so that everyone would know she was unclean. Giving no thought to the fear that was in her mind, she had only one goal, and that was to get her healing. Crawling low through the crowd, she strained and reached with all the strength left in her, all the while saying to herself: if I may but touch the hem of his garment, I shall be whole. Over and over she repeated those words out loud. They empowered her to greater and greater faith. She saw in her minds eye, and heard, the desired end result constantly. There! She did it! She just touched the hem of Jesus garment and instantly the bleeding stopped. Then a voice boomed through the crowd: who touched me? Jesus now turned facing her; his disciples surprised that He should ask the question with hundreds of people all around. Realizing He knew that it was she who had touched Him, she faced Him and acknowledged out loud to everyone what she had done and that she was healed. Jesus assured her: Daughter, be of good comfort; your faith has made you whole. Go in peace Although all sick people who had come to Him were healed, very few had the faith that she had, and Jesus knew this instantly. This woman received the healing she came for at the moment of her touch. Jesus, however, to reward her strong faith, went much further than healing her sickness. He declared that she was now also whole! That encompasses everything! Not only physical healing of one ailment, but also any other type of healing, like possibly her extreme fatigue due to the prolonged loss of blood, feelings of rejection, fear, and the depletion of all her finances. Every need she possibly had was met due to her faith! Are you in need of a healing touch? Go ahead, speak out loud words of faith to yourself, like she did. Then, do not listen to the thoughts of doubt and fear and cant dos. Press in, reach out, and He will reward your faith! Thank You Notes - Etiquette and Wording Samples

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Cori Locklin Yes, we all love to receive gifts, and weddings are a perfect occasion for gift-giving, as friends and loved ones customarily honor the commitment of the newly betrothed by showering them with wedding gifts. As the happy couple, just remember to always feel privileged - not entitled. Approach thank-you notes with as much thought and organization as the rest of your wedding planning process. Rules & Etiquette Send thank you notes to acknowledge everything from place settings to gifts of time or talent. Remember - a separate, handwritten note must be sent for each wedding present or act of kindness. Start sending thank yous as soon as gifts arrive, even if it is before your wedding (but make sure to use your maiden name). Gifts that you receive on your big day should be followed up with a thank you note no later than one month after you return from your honeymoon (now you can use your new last name). To ease the process, keep track of wedding gifts and thank-you cards on the same list of names and addresses used for your invitations. Personalize the thank you cards by ordering them with your monogram or with a picture from your big day on the front. What to Say - Wording Samples Thank you notes are written and signed by one person but should express the gratitude of both the bride and the groom. (”Mike and I sincerely appreciated…”) Make direct reference to the gift itself. For monetary gifts, indicate how the money will be used; whether to mention the amount given is optional. Here are some suggested wording examples to get you started: To a close friend or relative: Dearest Aunt Sandy, Thank you so much for the generous gift. As you know, John and I have been saving for a new home and your contribution will help greatly. We can’t wait to have you over for a housewarming party very soon! Thanks again for thinking of us and for sharing in our special day. To a more distant friend, relative or business colleague: Dear Mr. & Mrs. Lee, Thank you so much for the lovely vase. It will go beautifully on our kitchen table, and Meghan and I will think of you each time we use it. Thanks again for sharing our joy. To someone who couldn’t make it to the wedding but still sent a gift: Dear Denise & Chris, Thank you both very much for completing our sterling place setting collection. Martin and I look forward to using it at every special dinner we host. We truly missed you both on our special day and look forward to seeing you soon. To someone who wasn’t invited to the wedding but sent a gift anyways: Dear Lorie & Mike, Thank you both so much for the thoughtful gift certificate. Amanda and I look forward to purchasing new appliances for our kitchen with it. Thanks again for thinking of us during this special time in our lives. Fake a Tan with Sunless Tanning Lotion

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Lorene Radenz A great tan is associated with health and beauty. While a bronze look is desirable, especially in the summer or on holiday — we all know the dangers of the sun’s UV rays. Is a temporary tan worth the permanent sun damage, wrinkles, and skin cancer risk? Absolutely not! You can save time and avoid these risks entirely with sunless tanning lotion. Today’s self-tanners give you a deep golden tan, not the orange look of years ago. Many new self tanning lotions are tinted and these are the ones I recommend. Not only do they give you an initial tan, you’re more likely to apply the lotion evenly and avoid streaking. First, take a shower or bath and exfoliate your skin. Pay special attention to your elbows, knees and any other rough spots. These areas will soak up the self tanning lotion and turn darker so you need to get rid of any dead skin. Pat yourself dry and pin your hair up. Apply regular body or hand lotion to the dry spots you exfoliated. Allow yourself several minutes to completely dry. You may choose to wear thin gloves to put on the self tanning lotion and avoid getting it on your hands, but applying it with your bare hands will probably result in a more even application. It’s your choice. Start applying the lotion from the bottom - up, bracing your foot on a chair or stool. Rub in lightly, you can always go back later and apply a second time. Don’t forget the areas that would tan naturally in the sun, the back of your legs, knees, arms, and neck. When applying to your face, remember to smooth it on your eyelids and into your hairline — avoiding your eyes and hair. For people with sensitive skin, there are self tanning lotions formulated specifically for your face and will result in a more natural look. If you will be wearing your hair up, don’t forget to apply the self tanner on the back of your neck, and behind your ears to look more natural. When you’re finished, wash your hands thoroughly if you chose not to wear gloves, so your palms don’t turn an unnatural color. Use a hand towel to dry them completely. Before the lotion dries, it’s more likely to tan what you’re wearing too, so let yourself dry and put on some loose clothing. If you’re going to be sitting on a cloth chair or couch, sit on a towel to avoid staining. For a deep, dark tan before a special occasion, apply self tanning lotion before bed, and again in the morning. Before you go out, check yourself in the mirror for any streaks and correct them with a damp paper towel. Apply bronzing powder to your face and shoulders for a finishing touch, and hit the town! Migraines and Hormones - A Natural Approach

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Nicole Bandes Its estimated that 40 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches. Headaches are one of the leading causes of missed work or school. So why is it that so many of us suffer from such annoying and often debilitating pains in the head? Honestly, there are several reasons. Some of the most common triggers of migraines are stress, food allergies, caffeine withdrawal, medications, lack of sleep, extreme weather conditions, blood sugar fluctuations, and hormone imbalances. Many migraine suffers find little or no relief in either over-the-counter or prescription medications. And, even for those that do, rebound headaches are often a resulting side effect. When suffering from chronic headaches, it is important to learn your triggers. Keep a diary that tells the date, time, weather conditions, foods eaten in the last 24 hours, emotional stressors, amount of sleep, drugs taken or, if you are a female, where you are in your menstrual cycle. Determining your triggers can take you a long way towards reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines. Once you have eliminated many of the triggers (yes, through hard work and dedication), you may find your headaches arrive pre or post menstrual. You have just discovered that your migraines are triggered by hormones. Oh yes, the same lovely chemical that gives us mood swings, cramps, bloating, breast tenderness and those horrible chocolate cravings will also cause your migraine headaches. If you fall into this category, there is hope beyond medication. Its important to understand that this will require a commitment on your part. Balancing hormones can be a tedious and difficult prospect but the rewards are well worth the effort. Estrogen dominance is the most frequent cause of hormone imbalances. Here are a few keys to remember about estrogen dominance.Fat stores estrogen. The more weight you gain, the more estrogen you will retain. Stress produces cortisol which boosts estrogen levels.A toxic liver, from excess alcohol or pollution, will not filter estrogen out of our bodies. Many of the foods we eat are fed estrogens to make them grow and produce more food. Eating meat and diary products will increase your estrogen levels.Plastic containers, pesticides and cleaning chemicals produce xeno-estrogens, chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body.Skipping periods, whether by choice through the use of birth control pills or by nature, will prevent the release of progesterone which keeps estrogen levels in balance. Its no wonder girls as young as 7 and 8 are now starting their menstrual cycles. So what are the answers? You can beat hormone caused migraine headaches through good nutrition and supplementation as well as regular exercise. Here are some suggestions.Start shopping for hormone free meats. These can be found in health food stores or ordered online.Use non-toxic household cleaners and non-toxic pesticides whenever possible.Make sure you are getting at least 30 grams of fiber every day. If you arent eating enough to get this amount, be sure to supplement with a quality fiber product. Fiber binds to estrogen helping to remove it from the body.Vitamins A, C, B12 and E along with magnesium, selenium, calcium and anti-oxidants are essential to maintaining a healthy hormone balance.Supplement with DHEA. This hormone precursor promotes the development of progesterone which will keep estrogen in check. And, of course, there is progesterone cream. Be sure to select a high quality progesterone cream that offers no less than 500 mg of progesterone that is not synthetic. Also consider adding in Milk Thistle. This herb has a wonderful track record for cleansing and supporting the liver. If you are unsure of what products to use or which steps to take, be sure you work with someone that is familiar with natural alternatives. They should be able to guide you in your decision making process. By taking these steps, you should be on your way to improved health with a wonderful side effect, no more MIGRAINES!
