Are your Beliefs Preventing Weight Loss - Discover How Your Thoughts Affect Your Waistline
By Jenny May Clermont I know I’ve said it a million times, “you are what you eat”, the type of fuel (food) you put in your body determines what you get back from your body. Eat crap and you’ll feel lethargic, depressed, moody, unmotivated, angry, and the list goes on and on. But eat clean healthy, whole foods and you’ll feel vibrant, energetic, motivated, positive, happy, fulfilled and this list goes on and on as well. Eating well not only results in a smaller waistline but it is literally life changing. And it’s simply a matter of choice! So what’s stopping you? Why do you opt for the Snickers bar instead of those delicious fresh strawberries (or whatever your favorite fruit or veggie is) you packed for lunch? Maybe, just maybe it’s your mind. Just like you depend on food for fuel to get you through the day, you depend on your thoughts and thought processes just as much. And many of your thoughts stem from underlying beliefs that you have stored away somewhere in that mass called a brain - it may even be on a subconscious level. More often then not, it’s these beliefs that affect whether you succeed with your fat loss goals or any goal in general. And it’s these beliefs that determine the choices you make on a daily basis. To find out if your thoughts are hindering your fat loss efforts you have to start listening to your “self talk”. What’s self talk? It’s all those little comments you make in your head, under your breath, in response to a comment or a mistake. You know the ones - you make a simple mistake and you immediately think or mumble “How can I be so stupid?”, it’s all those negative little remarks you make to yourself throughout the day. How does self talk affect your fat loss? All those little negative comments stem from an underlying belief about yourself. Maybe you feel you have to be perfect, maybe you have some underlying guilt and feel you don’t deserve successful fat loss, maybe you just haven’t taken the time to love and appreciate who you are and how blessed you are. I can’t list all the underlying beliefs you might have about yourself - but I can tell you that to be successful in your fat loss efforts and your life, you need to identify them. These underlying beliefs can be incredibly damaging to your fat loss efforts on a subconscious level - they will actually cause you to sabotage your efforts by directing your choices - this is why you opt for that snickers bar or bag of chips instead of the fresh fruit or veggies you brought in. It may also be some of the reason why you never have the time to pack a lunch. Whenever you make a choice that works against your fat loss efforts and then you ask yourself “why did I do that?” — You now know why! How do you identify your underlying beliefs? You start by asking why? Why did I just say that? Why do I think that way? Why did I just eat that? Why? Why? Why? Until you find the answer. I have to warn you it’s not always easy. But once you identify that underlying belief you need to address where it came from and then create a new belief — a positive belief. This simple awareness is often enough to switch those negative thoughts and comments about yourself to positive ones and then the choices you make will start to fall in line with your goals. You’ll start preparing your meals, you’ll stop skipping breakfast, and the temptation for the unhealthy crap food will disappear! And this happens because you’ll no longer be dependent on the instant gratification found in refined sugars and simple carbs to make you feel good. You’ll no longer need to stress eat - the body will still crave it because it’s a biochemical response (read Is Estrogen Really Making Your Belly FAT? to learn more), but your thoughts will be strong and centered so you can choose to walk off that stress instead of eat. The gratification of transforming your body and your life into what’s you’ve always desired will be the driving factor behind your better choices, instead of some nonsense belief you had stored away from who knows when. Don’t believe me? Just Try it! 1. Start listening to your self talk - count the number of negative versus positive remarks towards yourself. 2. Go through the “why” process till you get the answer. 3.Turn the self talk around and focus more on the positive instead of the negative. 4. The rest will just take care of itself - guaranteed! Now the hard part is to maintain this outlook and not fall back into your old thinking patterns. It’s much like rebuilding that muscle tone you lost, you just have to be consistent until you start to reap the rewards. If you find you fall back into your old thought patterns, don’t beat yourself up, just come back to this article and start over again, just like eating healthy and incorporating exercise.
